The interesting history behind this song was that it was loved by both the Allies and the Germans during WWII. The song was originally German, but the Allies commonly listened to it on German radio, and it quickly became popular among them as well, leading to their own lyrics and recordings. Joseph Goebbels ordered German radio to cease broadcasting the song, due to his perception of it as being anti-war. In response, countless letters streamed in from German soldiers on all fronts, demanding its return. They succeeded.
